Nine year old boy breaks impressive fishing record off the coast of Cap Cana

Nine year old, Jack McCluskey, is the youngest angler to reach the Royal Slam Billfish Category

Cap Cana, Dominican Republic, April 12, 2010. - The coast of Cap Cana has been the perfect setting for Jack McCluskey, from Palm Beach, Fl., who was able to break the impressive record of the Billfish Royal Slam last Saturday. The Royal Slam achievement is undoubtedly the most difficult accomplishment in the world of sport fishing in any existing categories, as it requires time, a lot of planning and many trips to do it. To accomplish this ambitious feat the angler must capture each of the nine species listed below in their respective habitats to qualify. Many men and women have traveled thousands of miles their entire life trying to accomplish this feat and 9 year old little Jack has been able to achieve it in 10 months, becoming the youngest angler ever to get the record, which until now, less than 100 people in the world have been able to achieve.

The species that Jack has captured to win this incredible record are:

Blue Marlin (Pacific Ocean)

Blue marlin (Atlantic Ocean )

Black Marlin

Sailfish (Atlantic Ocean )

Sailfish (Pacific Ocean)

Spearfish (Pacific Ocean - Jack recently traveled to Kona, Hawaii with his family to catch this fish)

Swordfish (Captured by Jack last Friday in the Florida Keys)

Stripped Marlin

White Marlin (Caught on Saturday morning off the shores of Cap Cana)

The only fish that Jack needed to break the record of the Royal Slam was a White Marlin, which is found naturally only a few miles from the main channel entrance to the Cap Cana Marina. .Wes Davis, a 10 year old, was the owner of this record until last Saturday. Jack McCluskey broke this incredible mark on board the boat "Turn me Loose", with Captain Terry Brennan. All the species have been caught by Jack with the catch and release modality, as indicated by the regulations of the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA).  Cap Cana is a corporate member of both the IGFA and Bill Fish Foundation.

Upon his arrival at the Cap Cana Marina after breaking the world record, Jack McCluskey said “I am very happy because I had a great day”. He had 9 white marlin strikes and had two releases.  When asked what he would like to do now that he had accomplished the Bill Fish Royal Slam, he simply replied,” I want to do it all over again!”

Andrew New, Manager of the Cap Cana Marina, said that "the Royal Billfish Slam is one of the most impressive feats in sport fishing that has been achieved by a very select group of people. Some anglers spend their entire lives in search of this feat, but young Jack has done it at only 9 years of age, making him the youngest angler ever to do so. We are thrilled that he chose Cap Cana as his final destination on this most impressive journey!”

Dr. Ricardo Hazoury , Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cap Cana congratulated young Jack McCluskey on his achievement and noted that “this is a great example for all youngsters”, and hopes that “this will inspire many to follow in his footsteps in the world of sport fishing.”

Just days before the beginning of the 2010 Fishing Season, Cap Cana is proud to host Jack McCluskey and family and pleased to see a healthy presence of Marlin specie already running in the renowned Cabo Engano Bank.
